Home Advisor

The ask

An evolved app designed to better connect homeowners with local professionals to help on home projects.

Homeadvisor recently acquired Handy and was looking to scale their business from “request a quote” to a fixed-price, “instant-booking” model.

Our design team embedded with Homeadvisors team in Denver in order to collaborate on various user flows and help users understand the new instant-book offering. To match them with the right service and empower them to schedule and book with as little friction as possible.

We pushed their existing design system while improving the flow from launch to purchase.

The Homeadvisor core experience was designed to connect homeowners with local professionals that needed help on home projects. But at the time it lacked transparency to their sales process. A user would answer questions about their home, give up personal information, and then Homeadvisor would share their info with local businesses. This process created frustration when homeowners were often spammed with calls from local contractors. We knew there had to be a better way.

The existing design (left) was antiquated and not following best UX practices compared to the refreshed, modernized design (right)

We rolled up our sleeves and collaborated closely with the Homeadvisor product team and developers. Our goal was to output two distinct flows for user testing and implementation. The key KPI’s were instant booking conversion and PII capture.

Below is our initial proposed fixed price flow to allow people to enter their information and recieve more transparency in terms of next steps and price before committing to purchase.

Proposed home screen and ‘My Projects’ designs:

The branding and product design initiatives were happening on parallel paths with different timelines and teams. We worked closely with our internal brand team, product, and engineers to decide how to infuse the new elements into the existing interface post-MVP.

For the MVP, we examined and improved the “My Projects,” experience by creating a view that allows users to quickly reference all of their activity, jobs, and home “to-do’s”.
